Full Description:
We begin the tour with a visit to Elmina Castle (1482), one of the oldest European-built structures in sub-Saharan Africa. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Elmina Castle stands as a somber reminder of the atrocities of the transatlantic slave trade. Built by the Portuguese in 1482, the castle became a key site in the trade, holding enslaved Africans in inhumane conditions before they were shipped across the Atlantic. Walking through its historic walls, you’ll visit the dungeons where these individuals were confined, often for months, in unbearable conditions. The pain and suffering felt in these spaces are deeply moving, and our knowledgeable guides will provide a poignant narrative about the history of the castle, the lives of those who passed through it, and the resilience of the African spirit that survived such brutality.
Next, we continue to Cape Coast Castle (1555), another UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the central points of the transatlantic slave trade. Built by the Swedes in 1555 and later expanded by the British, the castle served as a significant slave trading hub on the West African coast. At Cape Coast Castle, you’ll explore the museum, which houses artifacts from this tragic period, and visit the dungeons where enslaved Africans were held before their journey to the Americas. The castle’s history is a powerful symbol of the impact of the slave trade, not only on Africa but on the entire world. As you walk through the dungeons and the museum, you’ll be reminded of the millions who suffered and died in these places of cruelty.
After these powerful, emotional experiences, we’ll pause for a restorative lunch at the Ridge Royal Hotel, where you can enjoy a delicious array of authentic Ghanaian dishes. It’s the perfect opportunity to reflect on the historical insights gained during the tour while relaxing and enjoying the vibrant flavors of Ghanaian cuisine.
